Memorising the whole Quran is a huge honour and a long journey. One of the first questions parents and adult students ask is how long it will take. The honest answer is: it depends. But there are clear patterns, and a good plan makes all the difference.
Typical Hifz timelines
- Full-time students (several hours a day) often finish in 1 to 3 years.
- Children studying alongside school usually take 3 to 5 years with daily classes and home revision.
- Adults with work and family often take 4 to 7 years, memorising a few lines a day.
These are typical ranges, not rules. Some students go faster, and some take longer. What matters most is consistency and strong revision, because memorising quickly and then forgetting helps no one.
What affects how long Hifz takes?
- Fluency first: students who already read fluently with tajweed memorise much faster.
- Daily time: 30 to 60 minutes of focused work every day beats long irregular sessions.
- Revision system: a clear revision plan prevents forgetting.
- Age and focus: children aged 7 to 14 often memorise very well, and adults bring discipline and understanding.
- Teacher support: a teacher who listens daily keeps the student accountable.
The three-part routine: sabaq, sabqi and manzil
Most Huffaz memorised using the same proven routine:
- Sabaq: the new lesson, often a few lines to half a page a day.
- Sabqi: revision of the last few days or weeks of new memorisation.
- Manzil: revision of older portions, rotating through everything already memorised.
As the amount memorised grows, more time goes into manzil. That is a good sign: it means the student is keeping what they have learned.
A sample weekly plan for a school-age child
- Five 30-minute classes a week with a teacher (sabaq and sabqi checked live).
- 15 to 20 minutes of home revision every day.
- One lighter day for manzil only.
Can you do Hifz online?
Yes. Online Hifz works well because the teacher can listen daily without any travel, and lessons fit around school. The key is a teacher who checks every lesson and a family that supports daily revision.
Our online Hifz classes are taught by Huffaz using the sabaq, sabqi and manzil method, with weekly updates for parents. Start with three free classes.
