Guide for parents

Noorani Qaida: a complete guide for parents

What the book covers, when to start, how long it takes and how to help your child practise at home.

Noorani Qaida is the book most children around the world use to learn to read the Quran. If your child is about to start, or you are wondering whether they are ready, this guide explains everything in simple terms.

What is Noorani Qaida?

Noorani Qaida is a beginner's primer for reading Arabic as it is written in the Quran. It teaches the alphabet, how letters change shape when they join and the vowel signs that tell you how to pronounce them. Its strength is its order: every lesson uses only what has already been taught, so children build skill step by step.

What the lessons cover

  • Single letters: the 29 letters and their correct sounds.
  • Joined letters: beginning, middle and end forms.
  • Short vowels (harakat): fatha, kasra and damma.
  • Tanween: the double vowels that add an "n" sound.
  • Long vowels (madd): alif, waw and ya used to stretch a sound.
  • Sukoon and shaddah: resting letters and doubled letters.
  • Words and verses: real words from the Quran, practised with the basic rules.

What is the best age to start?

Most children are ready at 4 or 5 years old. A good sign is that your child can sit and listen for about 15 minutes, and recognises some shapes and sounds. Older children and adults can start at any time, and often move faster.

How long does Noorani Qaida take?

With two or three short classes a week and a little daily practice, most children finish in 3 to 6 months. Very young children may take longer. That is normal, and rushing usually leads to weak foundations, so let the teacher set the pace.

How to help your child practise at home

  • Practise for 5 to 10 minutes a day rather than one long session a week.
  • Ask your child to "teach" you the lesson. Explaining helps them remember.
  • Praise effort and correct pronunciation, not just speed.
  • Keep the Qaida in the same place and practise at the same time each day.

What comes after Noorani Qaida?

Once the Qaida is complete, children start reading from the Quran itself, usually with the short surahs of Juz Amma, while learning tajweed rules properly. Many children later begin Hifz.

Our online Noorani Qaida classes are one to one with a patient teacher, and the first three classes are free.
